Information

Hamburg, FBWerner [c. 1720]. Copper engraving with a perspective view of the city of Naples from the sea (35 x 102 cm), with the city's most notable landmarks at the bottom, framed.

Specialist Notes

A rare view of Naples from the sea, taken by the German cartographer Probst during the brief period of Habsburg occupation of Naples. The influence of Central European culture is evident in the verticality of the buildings and monuments, transforming the Neapolitan city into a Nordic Gothic-style city.
