Specialist Notes
First edition of this study by Francesco Maria Avellino (Naples, 1788–1850). An archaeologist, philologist, and numismatist, among the leading scholars of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, he was a professor at the University of Naples and permanent secretary of the Pontaniana Academy. He was director of the Royal Bourbon Museum and in charge of the excavations of Pompeii from 1839 to 1850.
