Information

Amsterdam, Mortier, 1719. In 4vo. Two parts in one volume, each with its own title page in red and black ink and a vignette. With 35 plates in the text and 18 plates outside the text (some of which are folded) depicting sailing ships, tools, and caulking operations. At the end of the second part are 90 plates depicting naval flags. Some very light foxing. Contemporary full parchment binding, red edges, gilt title on the spine. Very minor defects.

Specialist Notes

An extremely rare first French edition that collects and reworks the most famous works by Dutch authors on naval architecture. The work is richly illustrated with descriptions of vessels, tools, caulking operations, and naval flags, including the "Pavillon de Naples" and "Pavillon des deux Siciles" on plate 37.
