Specialist Notes
Two of the most fascinating bird's-eye views of Naples by the renowned French lithographer and architect Alfred Guesdon. These are plates 11 and 12 from the celebrated collection of views of Italy's most important cities, based on drawings Guesdon made aboard a hot air balloon. The plates are distinguished by their extreme accuracy and faithful reproduction of the Neapolitan Riviera and their technical refinement, evident in the measured use of white lead and the rendering of the shadows cast by passing clouds, which lend the whole a sense of extraordinary originality.
