Specialist Notes
The Senuto people live in the north of the Ivory Coast and adjacent territories of Mali and Burkina Faso. Their tribal life was governed by the Lo or Poro society, to which all men belonged. Membership was divided into three grades: boys, young men and adults, and could be attained after passing many tests during ceremonies that took place every seven years.
The Calao, a large mythical bird, was one of the first creatures made by God. Its swollen body and large curved beak are an allegory of fertility and the continuation of the species.
The sculpture depicts a large bird with outstretched wings on which two smaller birds are carved. It has a long neck and a large beak that connects to its swollen belly. On its back, a snake, a sacred reptile, runs along its spine and carries the head of a gazelle in its mouth. The whole sculpture shows clear traces of polychromy.
