How bidding works

Information

51.5 × 14 × 17 cm
Wood with dark patina, signs of wear.

The complex composition of this work, which highlights the hairstyle, asymmetrical arms, and scarification of the body seated on the stool, testifies to the sculptor's skill. The severe erosion of the wood under the base is an indication of its proven age.

The lot is sold together with a certificate of expertise from Totem Gallery, Venice, Italy

Provenance

Totem Gallery, Venice, Italy

Specialist Notes

The Baulé people are the best known and most artistically appreciated in Ivory Coast. It originated in the mid-1700s when a group of notables from the Ashanti population of neighbouring Ghana, led by the legendary Queen Pokou, left their native land and moved to the coastal area of the Ivory Coast, thus creating a new population whose sculptures are well known for their refined details.
The statue depicts a man sitting on a stool, indicating an important figure, as does the elaborate hairstyle with braids and locks. His right hand touches his abdomen and his left hand touches his equally elaborate beard. His face is very serene and decorated with tribal scarification.
