Specialist Notes

Exhibited at the Promotrice in Turin in 1910, the Alpigiana is a leading painting in Luigi Rossi's production, which has not been seen in person since that exhibition event. The canvas is full of matter and with particular attention to the naturalistic element, especially in some details, such as the Alpine vegetation in the lower right or the eagle in the distance at the edge of the sky in the top center. The attitude of the woman who descends the hill with a sickle, pausing almost in a moment of meditation, relates her to Millet's thoughtful peasant women.
