Specialist Notes

Nicoletta Boschiero's note, written on the occasion of the 1989 retrospective, is still a significant text for the painting, crucial in the transition to the Novecento understood as a movement: "If in the years preceding 1938 Pancheri had progressively abandoned the Novecento formulas, this portrait constitutes a sudden turning point in his way of painting. [...] there is more ease and complicity on the part of the artist in tackling the theme, favoring the introspective reading of the temperament of the young woman portrayed: think also of the Pensierosa of 1939. [...] The Portrait of a Girl, already present at the Circolo Littorio exhibition of 1938-39 and therefore of 1938, exemplarily essential and composed, new in the half-length cut, represents the daughter of Silvio Branzi, a scholar friend of Pancheri".
