Specialist Notes

Still an elusive painter, Gaetano Pappagallo, we know from sources, was of Apulian origins and a contemporary of Leonardo De Mango, who would make his fortune in Istanbul. We learn from the archive papers reported in the volume by Erol Makzume ( From Puglia to Istanbul , 2005, pp. 54-55) that Pappagallo, like De Mango, benefited from a subsidy from the province of Bari for the continuation of his studies in the year 1868 and that at that date they had not yet sent in any essays.
If we know about De Mango's very successful career in Turkey, we still know nothing about Pappagallo. This painting, certainly presented as an essay of the academic period, highlights uncommon chromatic skills and a well-orchestrated layout of a professional painter. We hope that this discovery will give rise to studies on this mysterious, yet fascinating, artist.
