Until 1637, the type of Genoese coins had remained more or less unchanged like the original one, although softened with arches and decorations and naturally bearing, especially in the legend of the D/, traces of the various Governments and Doges that succeeded one another and also obviously of the various foreign dominations...' 'In 1637 with solemn celebrations and ceremonies held in the Cathedral, in the Ducal Palace, in the port of the whole city, the Most Holy Mary was proclaimed Queen of the Republic of Genoa...' 'From 1637 onwards the type was completely changed and all, or almost all, of the coins of Genoa bore a religious imprint from that year: the Most Holy Mary, Saint George on horseback, the Immaculate Mary and Saint John the Baptist appeared constantly until the fall of the Republic in 1797.'
