The GM initials intrigued numismatists of the period, eager to find an explanation. It's speculated that they may stand for Gorzkowski Mantova, an Austrian general who commanded the Mantua garrison and filled the city with Austrian soldiers to prevent a citizen uprising and the city's alliance with Charles Albert's troops. Another hypothesis is Garrison Mantua or Military Government. During the state of siege, silver was requisitioned from churches and private individuals to fund the issuance of the three denominations.
