Obverse: Armored bust facing right, wearing a cap and holding a long sword obliquely in his right hand. The legend reads GG (Nicola Gatti, Master of the Mint); - Reverse: Savoy coat of arms flanked by FE–RT and surmounted by a love knot, all within a quatrefoil frame.

There are numerous variations of these large heads in the Duke's portrait. The example in question, with its rounded portrait, is not only one of the earliest, but should also be considered an intermediate version between the first type and the second type with a vertical sword.
