A rare 1841 Model cutlass for a navy officers, 1846

length 53.5 cm.
Wide, straight, double-edged blade, ribbed in the middle and willow-shaped, areas with rust damage; at the base marked "N.P. AMES CABOTVILL" and "US 1846 R". Brass hilt with knuckle guard and large number "16", curl-shaped parry quillon and on one side marked “RC”, on the other "JL". Solid, brass grip worked in scales; pommel with flattened orbs bearing on both sides a carving of an American eagle with shield and lightning bolts. Leather scabbard with brass mounts fixed with two rivets; the chape with the same numbering of the knuckle guard, here written in Roman numerals.
