A magnificent helmet of the Noble Guard, epoch Pius IX
height 31.5 cm.
Silver-plated metal skull, brass comb with lion's head at the end, black horsehair tail, gilded plaque with the inscription "PIO IX"; seal hair turban with front frieze depicting papal emblem on silver-plated plaque; armoured velvet chin straps with gilded brass scales worked with laurel leaves. Inside, leather sweat-band (signs of use and time) with border decorated in gold. Very rare.
