Information
Turin, Fontana, 1844-1847. 4 volumes. In 4°. Vol. I: Asia - Vol. II: Oceania - Vol. III: Africa and America - Vol. IV: Europe. Numerous plates with colored engravings, slight foxing. Bound in green half leather with marbled boards, gilt title stamped on the spine, minor defects. Giovanni Fiastri's ex libris on the pastedown.
Specialist Notes
A rare work, prized for its text and especially for the beautiful plates illustrating the customs and traditions of various peoples. Volume IV contains rich iconographic documentation relating to the Papal States, Sardinia, and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The work constitutes a fantastic gallery for the history of costume. It is a significant example of the nineteenth-century interest in ethnology and the description of non-European and European cultures, defining social anthropology as the science of cultural diversity.
