Specialist Notes
This is the first folio edition of the Pezzana to feature all illustrations, as subsequent editions, between 1710 and 1790, lacked illustrations, with the exception of the 1734 edition in small quarto format, which features 22 woodcut plates. The elegant frontispiece is the work of Isabella Piccini (1644–1734), a Venetian engraver who trained in her father's workshop. Having entered the Franciscan convent of Santa Croce in Venice in 1666, she took the name of Sister Isabella, continuing to successfully practice engraving. Her work, in demand for many decades, represents one of the rare and significant examples of a female engraver active in Venetian publishing between the 17th and 18th centuries.
