Giuseppe Maria della Margarita maintained the role of commander of the artillery in Turin, proving to be one of the most active defenders of the city under siege in 1706. On this occasion he entrusted his nephew Giuseppe Amico di Castell'Alfero with the task of coordinating the activity of the artillerymen with that of the miners and engineers.[2] A profound expert in language and Latin, Solaro attempted several literary experiments; what he wrote about the siege, under the title Journal Historique du Siege de la Ville et de la Citadelle de Turin l'Année 1706, represents one of the most faithful accounts of the unfolding of wartime and civil events, but the author never acknowledged or signed it, also because at the time of printing, which took place in Amsterdam in 1708, the volume contained glaring errors not present in the manuscript version.
