Specialist Notes
A pair of engravings from Jacques Louis Engramelle's celebrated work Papillons d'Europe, published in Paris by Delaquette, Basan & Poignant between 1779 and 1792. The engravings, finely hand-colored at the time, were created by Desfontaines, Juillet, and other artists. Ernst is listed as one of the work's illustrators, although most of the images are based on drawings by Maria Eleonora Hochecker. Papillons d'Europe is considered one of the most important and refined French publications dedicated to butterflies and moths. The edition, printed in just 250 copies, included among its subscribers high-ranking figures, including the King and Queen of France, members of the royal family, the King of Spain and the King of Sweden, and illustrious scholars such as the Duke of Aumont and the Count of Buffon.
