Engraving, 19th century. 405 x 540 mm. At the bottom margin, caption "VIEW OF THE EXTERIOR OF THE GREAT BASILICA OF ST. PETER IN THE VATICAN: Architecture by Michelangelo Buonarota. This was erected partly on the foundations of the Circus Neronian. 1. Place where the Mosaics of St. Peter are worked. 2. Sacristy: near this, the Obelisk, now seen in St. Peter's Square, rose upright from the ground and was centered on the Spina of the Circus Subd. 3. The great Dome, at the top of which is the metal Ball, inside which about twenty people can fit. 4. Mount Vatican. 5. Remains of Granite and Parian Marble Columns, which supported the Septizonium, demolished by Sixtus V. / Piranesi, Architect, Fec.", light browning, slight foxing, 3 small stains.
