Specialist Notes

Charles-Nicolas Cochin (Paris, 1715–1790), a French engraver, draftsman, and art theorist, was among the most influential figures in 18th-century artistic taste. Trained by his father, an engraver and collaborator at the court of Louis XV, he quickly achieved fame with his engravings of royal ceremonies and celebrations. From 1752, he was the curator of the king's drawings and, from 1755, secretary of the Académie Royale.
