Information
Rome, Jac. Frey [18th century]. Etching after a painting by Carlo Maratta, 477 x 655 mm, paper mounted on cardboard, some small losses in the margins.
Specialist Notes
A large and rare engraving by the Italian artist Andrea Procaccini (1671–1734), based on a work by Carlo Maratta (1625–1713) and published by the Swiss printer Jakob Frey (1681–1752). The work depicts the young Roman woman Clelia on horseback crossing the Tiber, leaving the camp of the Etruscan king Porsenna with her companions. The Latin inscription recalls a passage from Livy's historical work Ab Urbe Condita (II, 13).
