LOT DESCRIPTION
The BMW Z1 represents the spectacular debut of the "Z" lineage, the initials of Zukunft (future), a term that has defined its design philosophy since its debut. Produced in limited editions between 1989 and 1991, this roadster revolutionized the automotive landscape thanks to its bold technical solutions and avant-garde design.
Its most iconic feature is undoubtedly the system of vertically sliding pocket doors, which descend into the side sills, allowing for an exhilarating door-down drive. The mechanism, powered by electric servomotors and toothed belts, also automatically coordinates the windows, which retract into the body of the car.
Beyond its aesthetics, the Z1 shone with its engineering innovation: the bodywork was made up of removable plastic panels, while the chassis introduced the sophisticated “Z-link” rear suspension, a true forerunner of modern multilink designs.
With only 8,000 units produced by June 1991, the Z1 is now an extremely rare collector's item. Although Italy was one of the main markets after Germany, the share destined for this country was less than 7% of total production. This small number, combined with unique technical solutions, makes the BMW Z1 a car with timeless appeal and sure to be historically appreciated.
