Specialist Notes

An interesting Italian edition of Edgar Allan Poe's tales, undated but datable to the first two decades of the 20th century. The illustrations are by Arnaldo Ginna (1890-1982), real name Arnaldo Ginanni Corradini, a pseudonym suggested by Giacomo Balla. He began his artistic career among the first Futurists, whom he met at the home of F.T. Marinetti. Among them were Boccioni, Carrà, and Russolo. But Ginna almost immediately distanced himself from the Futurist movement, which he nevertheless enthusiastically embraced, developing a more intimate style of painting, drawing on his strong spiritualist inclinations and his interest in spiritualism and the occult. He was also considered a precursor of Surrealism. The plates he drew for Poe's tales are a fitting example.
