Specialist Notes
«A tribute to the lofty idealism of his literary production, to the understanding and love of truth with which he described the different types of human existence» Romain Rolland was a French writer and playwright. He is best known for his cyclical novel Jean-Christophe (1904–1912), a great portrait of Europe between the 19th and 20th centuries, in which, combining autobiographical motifs with insights from Beethoven's life, he narrated the adventures of a young musician struggling against a suffocating tradition. A pacifist and anti-fascist, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1915 .
