GIUSEPPE MAZZINI ANNOUNCES THE PLANNED LAUNCH OF A NEW NEWSPAPER IN ROME.
This is La Roma del Popolo, published in 1871 with the aim of educating workers, taking up the themes of his book I doveri dell'uomo (The Duties of Man ). This periodical had a short but intense existence, being published between March 1871 and March 1872. It was preceded by a special issue compiled by Mazzini himself on February 9, 1871, and was published regularly from March 1, 1871, to March 21, 1872, for a total of 56 issues.
"Dear Mr. Raffaele, this microscopic note travels from London, where I am only a short while, to tell you that I once received yours—which was very dear to me—that I intend to publish a newspaper in Rome in the first half of February—which I would like, among other things, to be a sort of bond between all good people, so that all of you might be interested—that I consider you the best of the good, and that therefore I am sending you a share. If you can take it, good; if you can get it taken, even better: if you cannot do either, we will remain friends in the same way, and I will consider you solely as a subscriber to the publication when it comes out, and as a man who, if he finds himself already on the path to truth, will tell others about it. There. The journey, the snows, the Alps had reawakened the old pain in me; but it seems to me that it is weakening and will disappear, I hope so much so that I can set out again and be closer to the cradle of my duties and my hopes.
