Specialist Notes
These proverbs inspired Grandville's expressive depictions of period costumes and animal scenes. His self-portrait appears on page 354, as he signs his name on a wall. Although this book lacks the surreal qualities of Un Autre Monde , the presence of a significant number of anthropomorphic illustrations, similar to those in Scenes de la vie privee et public des animaux , elevates it above the typical "romantique" book and makes it a worthy addition to Grandville's oeuvre.
