Specialist Notes
A beautiful letter from Capponi to Baron Sigismondo Trecchi, a patriot and fervent conspirator who had been arrested several times. A friend of Foscolo, Manzoni, and Confalonieri, he also financially supported Italian exiles dedicated to the cause of Italian unification. The letter mentions Leopardi, Manzoni, and others.
"Here, my dear, is another prayer, and for this I pledge all that zeal, even so, to do good. This Manifesto of that unfortunate Leopardi is aimed at procuring the means to live at least for some time in Florence, and not be forced to return to his very ugly Recanati where […] he could physically live for a long time. You will therefore procure subscriptions from all your friends and from all those who [were] pitied by that fine mind at […]. And I will be as grateful to you as I can, and in this too […] my Sigismondo."
