Specialist Notes
Domingo de Soto, OP (Segovia, 1494 – Salamanca, November 15, 1560), was a Spanish priest, philosopher, and theologian, considered, along with Francisco de Vitoria, one of the greatest exponents of the School of Salamanca. A supporter of the vow of poverty, he fought for the defense of the oppressed. In a dispute with Philip II of Spain, he defended the rights of the poor and joined Bartolomé de Las Casas in the Valladolid Council for the rights of the American Indians. In particular, he declared the Indies to be non- terra nullius , given that they had already been inhabited before Columbus's first voyage.
