Beautiful illustrated frontispiece designed by Ghedini and engraved by Zucchi, vignette on the frontispiece engraved by Andrea Bolzoni based on a drawing by Francesco Pellegrini, large header to the preface letter and numerous other vignettes at the beginning of each scene of the tragedy with portraits of pontiffs and emperors, 4 endpapers, some historiated initials and a large number of typographical decorations, a perfect example. Modern decorated cardboard binding.
Specialist Notes
First edition. In this tragedy, Varano succeeded in combining his religious intentions with an effective dramatic core, making it his most esteemed work. Morazzoni and Poggiali, 716: "An original edition, beautiful and uncommon."
