This painting depicting the myth of Pan and Syringa (Ovid, Metamorphosis, I, 687-712) can be connected to a canvas of different composition by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, which however it presents the same subject, the same dimensions and the same framing tending towards an oval (see the file by J.P. Cuzin and P. Rosenberg, in J. H. Fragonard and H. Robert in Rome, exhibition catalogue, Rome, Villa Medici, 1990, pp. 149- 150, where the picture is dated 1761).
