The painting is accompanied by a copy of a letter from Roberto Longhi, dated Florence, 11/20/1961, which attributes it to Gerrit van Hontorst, referring to the artist's mature activity, after his return to the hometown of Utrecht.
The prototype of this version, autographed and signed, was auctioned at Sotheby's, London, 9/12/1987, lot 61, and published by B. Nicholson in Caravaggism in Europe , fig. 1273.
