Auction details

A catalogue of just over 500 lots makes up the auction of Books, Autographs & Prints of 24-25 June. A first section, with eight rare incunabula including a splendid copy of Dante della Magna (Florence, 1481), precedes the sixteenth-century editions, rich in rarities and curiosities. Noteworthy are the 1548 vernacularised edition of Ptolemy, with its dozens of maps, the two 1502 editions of Dante, Aldo's and the counterfeit, several valuable illustrations such as Porcacchi, Vitruvius, etc.

Among the separate sections, a large selection of more than 20 editions of esotericism, alchemy and magic, and a fine culinary section with 23 lots from various eras are worth mentioning.

Between the 19th and 20th century are no less than 36 editions of artist's books, some of absolute value and uniqueness. Worthy of special mention is the extremely rare first edition of Pushkin's Boris Godunov (1831), a valuable correspondence by De Chirico and a collection of Bodoni documents of absolute interest.

The Rare Books, Autographs and Early Printed Books Department finds its roots in the decennial experience of Fabio Massimo Bertolo and Silvia Ferrini, and their extensive knowledge of the national and international market.

Sales include all bibliophile areas: from incunabula to modern editions, from illuminated manuscripts to illustrated books produced over the centuries, from local history to the masterpieces of national typography, notwithstanding ancient and early modern printed books, atlases and cartography.

A constant presence is indeed that of the manuscripts and autographs of all periods and genres, alongside historically and culturally-relevant archives, funds and epistolary collections.

In parallel to regular auction sales, the department follows Private Transactions – upon private and institutional clients’ requests – of single works and entire collections. Estimates are always free of charge and are offered with the utmost discretion.

For inheritance and insurance purposes, the department provides fee-based expertise and estimates. Our specialists are registered Periti within the Camera di Commercio.

Our specialists are available for free valuations of single items and entire collections of rare books and libraries, for auction sales in Rome, and expertise for insurance or inheritance purposes.
