Information
London, Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans and Roberts, 1851. In small 8vo. Bound in papier mâché. Gilt edges. Title page with gold frame and gold and black lettering. The first page of the text is chromolithographed with gold fillets and decorative initials present throughout the volume. The remaining pages are printed in black and gold with two-color initials. First edition. Except for light browning, this copy is in excellent condition.
Humphreys was known for his highly decorative and experimental bindings – this binding represents a further development of his papier mâché style. The finely crafted and decorated papier mâché covers are framed in leather, with a gold background (now partly oxidised) appearing between the ribbon motifs. The front cover features a terracotta cameo of Shakespeare in the centre; the back cover features a similar medallion with Shakespeare's initials in place of the image.
