Information

Venice, Aldo Manuzio, 1514 [but after 1517]. In 8°. In-8° (158x97 mm). 220 leaves, [1], 2 blanks, [1]. Aldine brand at the beginning and end, marginal restorations and repairs on the first leaf. Excellent state of conservation. Later binding in full red morocco with Aldine anchors impressed in gold on each cover within a double fillet frame and gilded title on a tag on the spine.

Excellent Aldine edition of Virgil in the edition after 1517: the two pages of errata, present in the 1514 edition, are replaced by two blank pages, and the letter "t" is missing from the register, even though the fascicle t is present. RENOUARD (68, 8) referring to this edition, notes: «extremement Correcte, et méritant à tous égards l'estime qui lo portoit Nic. Heinsius» (who used the corrected edition for a small-format reprint in 1676) and places the publication of this amended version no earlier than 1519. MAMBELLI, Virgil 124: «the second [this one], however, was executed with great care and deserved the praise of Heinsio and Heyne. This one, in place of the Errata, has 4 blank pages».
Copy with provenance Umberto Saba , signature “Frombolo” on the frontispiece which refers to the figure of Aurelia Gruber Benco, Silvio Benco's daughter.
