Information
La Haye, Pierre de Hondt, 1736. In 2°, 2 parts in one vol., 445 x 290mm. Engraving title page printed in red and black, 80 plates in total, of which 66 are folded, the first without indications, the next 5 marked with the letters from A to E and the others numbered from 1 to 74, slight tears and browning, the illustrated frontispiece is missing, contemporary calf binding with 7-ribbed spine decorated in gold, title on red tag, losses and defects, small restorations.
Specialist Notes
Philips Vingboons (or Vinckboons, Vinckeboons, Vinckbooms) (c. 1607 – 2 October 1678) was a Dutch architect. He belonged to the school of Jacob van Campen, that is, Dutch classicism. Vingboons was particularly appreciated in his hometown, Amsterdam.
Unlike Jacob van Campen, Vingboons creatively adapted Classicism to the typically narrow Amsterdam townhouses. Philips Vingboons is considered the inventor of the Amsterdam “Halsgevel” (neck facade) type, as he designed the oldest surviving “Halsgevel” in Amsterdam, at Herengracht 168, in 1638. In fact, it is sometimes even called “Vingboonsgevel” in his honour. It was widely imitated in the Dutch Classicist period (1640-1665) on a large scale. In simpler houses, it appeared as a simple brick altar pillar, with little ornamentation – this type is called “Vingboons-imitatie” (imitation of Vingboons).
