Non vi sono notizie sulla vita del Pausania. Si ritiene che sia nato a Magnesia sul Sipilio in Asia Minore, della sua morte non si conosce né l'anno né il luogo. Di lui resta questa opera scritta intorno al 180 d.C., che offre un prezioso materiale descrittivo e informativo per la storia del patrimonio artistico della Grecia, materiale arricchito da minute informazioni sui culti locali, le feste civili e religiose, i costumi, la mitologia, ecc.
