Information
Historic 500 Lire share title yielding 4% per year of the Società del Giardino, a refined gentlemen's club in Milan that still exists. On green paper, 210 x 260 mm., the share is registered to the Engineer Bernardo Pestalozza.
Specialist Notes
Of these shares, there are approximately seventy in circulation. This one was issued in 1840, on January 30, by the Società del Giardino of Milan, one of the very few European clubs still in operation. The Circolo della Società del Giardino was founded in 1783 by a group of twenty-two Milanese bourgeois under the guidance of the Founding Member and future President Francesco Bolchini. At the beginning it had entertainment and recreation purposes but over time it took on an ever greater cultural and political commitment. The club was originally located “beyond the Stadera tavern at the end of the Porta Orientale course”. But it changed locations numerous times in Milan until 1818 when it moved to Palazzo Spinola (via San Paolo 10), the current headquarters of the club.
