Written by an anonymous author, this dark and intriguing Italian Renaissance comedy in five acts tells the story of Alonso, a Jew (a "marrano" or converso) from Barcelona. The protagonist emigrates to Italy after fleeing his native Spain during the Inquisition, and later changes his name to Rodrigo to avoid persecution. The story goes that, after being forced to flee Barcelona following the burning of his house, Alonso and one of his sons flee to the Spanish island of Mallorca, where he continues to be persecuted by the Inquisition.* After numerous stops along the way, he eventually settles in Florence. The main plot of the play concerns the circumstances in which the protagonist and the other members of his family are reunited after traveling to Florence, unbeknownst to each other. This play, although subjective, represents one of the few sources that can be used to understand the cultural perception and material reality of Jewish converts in Italy during the 16th century.
