EXCELLENT ELZEVIRIAN EDITION OF GUARINI'S MASTERPIECE.
An ingenious and audacious experiment, Guarini's pastoral tragicomedy aims to present itself as a synthesis and innovative overcoming of the genres present on the sixteenth-century theater scene. Heir, in terms of themes and typologies, to a now consolidated and illustrious Ferrara pastoral tradition, animated by a spirit of competition with the Aminta of Tasso - which, however, does not exhaust the horizon of the Guarini challenge - , Pastor Fido, a text of deceptive levity, exhibits a combinatorial exercise practiced at all levels.
