Specialist Notes
These proverbs inspired Grandville's expressive depiction of period customs and animal scenes. His self-portrait appears on page 354, signing his name on a wall. Although this book lacks the surreal qualities of Un Autre Monde, the presence of a substantial number of anthropomorphic illustrations in the manner of those that appeared in Scenes de la vie privee et public des animaux, elevates it above the typical “romantique” book and makes it a worthy addition to Grandville's oeuvre.
