Specialist Notes
Considered one of the first dystopian tales in which a French citizen disillusioned by the problems of his nation embarks on a journey to an island populated by individuals with an effeminate appearance, wearing make-up and devoted to celebrations and pleasures, a sharp satire of the tumultuous events at the court of Henry III. The latter is symbolized by King Hermaphrodite, a ruler who oscillates between the masculine and the feminine.
