Florence, under Doni, on the first of August 1547. In the 4th. On the frontispiece the Medici coat of arms, followed by the famous panel with the three laureate poets, at the end of the volume Lion lying on a shelf holding a flower between his paws, under the shelf a shield, restoration and reinforcement on the internal margin of the first papers, first final bifolio of the issue K from another copy with restoration on the lower white margin, without loss, copy enriched by an AUTOGRAPHED LETTER OF DONI applied to the title page. Ex libris of the Marquis Roberto Ridolfi on the pastedown, with his bibliographical note on the present copy on the second flyleaf, modern amateur binding in full brown leather with dry impressions and gold fillets.
Specialist Notes
«Highly sought after book, cited by the Accademici della Crusca», the volume is part of the limited production of Anton Francesco Doni (1513-1574) as a printer in the «population of San Pier Maggiore near the corner of Via Nuova», between 1546 and 1547. The volume printed «on the first day of August 1547» reflects the cult of Doni, secretary of the Florentine Academy at the time, for the three Florentine crowns, represented in the woodcut frontispiece, together with the world, a allegorical figure and at Marzocco. The volume contains Dante's epistle to Guido da Polenta, dated 30 March 1314, which most scholars have considered apocryphal since the nineteenth century.
Doni dedicates the work to Leonora of Toledo, Duchess of Florence: "...I have with great diligence brought together in a few months these ancient prose works of the three first Dante, Petrarch & Boccaccio & to make the volume larger, which was otherwise small...I collected certain beautiful prose works by ancient authors i who also wrote & deserved praise in that time, when our language began to flourish. (...) Therefore by reading such writings, they will be able to have many and beautiful examples, & knowledge of many things that in history belong (...).
