Specialist Notes
Interesting fourteenth-century devotional miscellany made in the Lombardy area (frequent references to Milan and Pavia) containing texts on homiletics, ascetics, metaphysics, theology, etc. The classic volume for use by itinerant preachers, who could find in it sacred texts but above all paraphrases, exegesis, homilies, etc. to be used in their sermons. The topics dealt with follow the liturgical year, with texts on Advent, the Annunciation, a commentary on the Ave Maria, miracles of the Madonna, the miracle of the conversion of a Jew, a commentary on Deuteronomy 33, forms for mailing addresses, etc. A codex model extensively studied by Petrucci, with poor characteristics, written on paper, without decorations, with different scripts, perhaps made with the pitch system. In this sense, an exemplary testimony of fourteenth-century religious literature, in the century of the great diffusion of mendicant religious orders.
