Title page within an elaborate architectural frame engraved on wood, surmounted by a brand with ornate motto, headers and drop caps, with 95 (of 100) full-page plates engraved on wood, pp. omitted from the numbering. 285-286, missing B8 (p. 31-31); C8 (p. 47-48) F2 (p.83-83), F7 (p.93-94) and T1(p.291-292), a reinforcement on the outer white margin of 3 leaves, tear from plate on p. 124, a tear in the lower white margin of the plate on p. 161, foxing, reddening and halos diffused on some leaves, rare stains, binding from the 16th century. XIX in full parchment, gilt titles on smooth spine label.
Specialist Notes
First edition of this pleasant collection of illustrated fairy tales, of which the present copy constitutes the "Variant B", with the heading of the letter of dedication composed on five lines. Nobleman, ecclesiastic, painter, poet and translator, pupil and secretary of Titian, Verdizzotti was born in Venice in 1525 and died around 1600. Mortimer II, pp. 724-725.
