Turin, Alessandro Fontana, 1850. In 2nd. 3 vols. Text within a double black fillet frame, 3 allegorical frontispieces, with 306 satirical plates engraved in copper, woodcut initials and finials, slight flourishes, lcontemporary binding in half leather and marbled paper, title and friezes in gold on the spine, minor defects.

Specialist Notes

The ideal continuation of the illustrated satirical newspaper of enormous success in the Risorgimento "Il Don Pirlone" which ended its publications on 2 July 1849, with the fall of the Roman Republic, is a prestigious and passionate work of political satire. Harsh, biting and polemical images play a decisive role in highlighting and enhancing the text. In defense of the republican experience, between cultured references and popular diffusion, the three volumes offer a scathing narration of the historical events not only in Rome but in Italy and Europe.
