The volume also includes three songs celebrating the birth of Giano Fregoso, son of Bandello's friend, Cesare Fregoso. They are the first original writings by Bandello to be published, preceded only by his translation of part of Boccaccio's Decameron. Most famous for his Novellas, from which several works by Shakespeare are believed to have been based (including Romeo and Juliet and Twelfth Night), Bandello was a courtier, envoy and secretary, especially in Milan and Mantua; in 1550 he became bishop of Agen. This volume is also THE FIRST BOOK PRINTED IN AGEN. The printer, Antoine Reboul, attaches a note to the reader in which he apologizes for the errors, due to the difficulties encountered by the composers with the Italian language.
