Specialist Notes
Born in Rome in 1566, Giovanni Baglione, with his work divided into five days, and following the chronology of the pontiffs who succeeded one another from Gregory XIII to Urban VIII, hands down precise and largely reliable information on artistic production in Rome, giving beginning of a genre that will find innumerable imitators and continuators in the various artistic guides that will succeed him. The editio princeps was published in Rome, by Andrea Fei in 1642; the second edition still in Rome by Manelfi in 1649. The third came out in Naples in 1733, the first to include the life of Salvator Rosa written by G.B. Passeri, and was published again in 1739 and 1743, again in Naples. New editions saw the light only in the 20th century.
