Florence, in the Giunti printing house, 1577. In 4°. Medici coat of arms on the title page, illustrated drop caps, recto of the card with the Register, Cross of the Order of the Knights of Santo Stefano engraved in red ink at verso of the same paper O3, all woodcut, halos damp, few leaves with small gaps in the white margins, binding in coeval parchment, front plate detached from the body of the text, tear on the spine, some stains.
Specialist Notes
The order was established on March 15, 1562 by Cosimo I of Tuscany, who was its first grand master. It was dedicated to Saint Stephen I, pope and martyr, because on his anniversary (August 2) the Medici troops had won two important victories: that of Scannagallo (1554) and that of Montemurlo (1559)The emblem of the Order was the red cross on a white field.
