Specialist Notes
First edition of this rare work of emblems. Founded in 1563 by G.Bornati, A.Caprioli and G.Martinengo, it was the most important of the Brescian academies of the 16th century. It was placed under the protection of St. John the Apostle and had as its insignia a flame shooting from the flint and the motto "Exilit quod delituit" and later Fileno in the act of playing the whistle with the motto "Intus non extra". It remained alive until 1583 and, after a short period of decline, resumed only to disappear in 1623. Bartolomeo Arnigio was its first secretary. He cultivated poetry and letters.
