Specialist Notes
The most important magazine of the Italian Enlightenment, born on the initiative of Pietro Verri in close collaboration with the "Società dei Fugni" group: Alessandro Verri, Cesare Beccaria, Sebastiano Franci, Giuseppe Visconti and others. The magazine's program is based on the plurality of topics and on the participation of a very varied audience of readers who succeeds, in the space of coffee, in creating a new form of sociality that arises from the meeting of men and different classes. An essential component of the Enlightenment battle of the Caffè is its literary and linguistic perspective. The problem of the diffusion of lights is in fact also a problem of language: "things and not words" is one of the mottos of the Café, whose language is not limited to passively reproducing reality, but must know how to cross it and explain it; a language that decisively cuts the bridges with classicism and linguistic purism.
